Sinterklaas (also called Sint-Nicolaas or De Goedheiligman in Dutch and Saint Nicolas in French) is a traditional Winter holiday figure in the Netherlands, Aruba, Suriname, Netherlands Antilles and Belgium, celebrated every year on Saint Nicholas' eve (December 5) or, in Belgium, on the morning of December 6. The feast celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of, among other things, children.

Sinterklaas is a very importend day for the childeren, we celebrate it with songs, we eat mandarins and biscuit that we get from the Sint. The Sint have lots of helpers, they called " zwarte Pieten" , they help to distribute the presents to the good childern, dogs, .. Sinterklaas rides on a with horse, the name of the horse is "slecht weer vandaag" that means bad weather today. He helps Sinterklaas en Zwarte Piet to walk on the roofs of the houses .

here for the cooking fans: how to make "Speculaas" or dutch cookies

Ingredients
1 cup dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/4 cups butter
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup slivered almond
3/4 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups sifted flour
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
3/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Directions
1 Combine sugar and milk in a bowl.
2 Stir until smooth.
3 In another bowl, sift the dry ingredients and blend in the butter until the mixture is like cornmeal.
4 Add the sugar and milk mixture and the almonds.
5 Mix well.
6 Wrap in foil, or wax paper and refrigerate overnight.
7 Roll out the dough pretty thin.
8 Use Christmas cookie cutters (or a windmill or other shaped cookie cutter if it isn't Christmas).
9 Dust the cutter well with flour to be sure it doesn't stick.
10 Place on greased cookie sheet and bake at 180° for about 15 - 20minutes.
11 Remove and cool.

Smakelijk eten - bon appetit

I have already left a comment for you on my BLOG
Mom is neither really good with the whole baking thing nor with sharing "unhealthy" things with me :( Nevertheless your "Spekulatius" recipe changed her mind... She said she is giving it a go! The baking, not the sharing... SIGH!!!!
